HouseSolid.jpgSolid flooring can only be installed over plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and wood subfloors. Also, since solid flooring does not perform well in high-moisture areas, such as basements, it can only be installed in on-grade (ground level) and above-grade (upstairs) areas. Basement areas typically have a concrete floor and would require the flooring to be glued down, an installation method that is not suitable for solid flooring.

In contrast, engineered flooring can be installed on all levels over plywood, OSB, wood and concrete subfloors. It is important to note that engineered flooring has been designed to help mitigate potential moisture issues and is not a solid piece of wood. Instead, it features a cross-layer construction that is designed to reduce expansion. Engineered flooring can be glued down or stapled. Engineered flooring that is a minimum of 3 inches in width can be installed using a floating installation method.
