3 Tips for Avoiding Floor Damage During the Holiday Season

Ready or not, the holiday season has arrived!  Along with all the decorating and feasting comes a flurry of activity that has the potential to damage your hardwood floors.  Keep your floors in dazzling shape with these tips.

1. Visitor Traffic

To limit the debris that makes its way into your home, place outdoor mats at each entryway and clean them regularly.  Place rugs inside entryways and, if possible, have visitors remove their shoes at the door.  A shoe rack or oversized basket can be placed near the entry for convenience.  Remember that spike heels and damaged stilettos that have lost the protective heel pad can leave markings in your floor.

Place area rugs in high-traffic areas throughout the home, such as hallways and gathering spaces, to protect your floors from debris and moisture tracked in by guests.  When selecting a rug, opt for a synthetic version, and avoid rugs with rubber or foam backings, as they can trap moisture and damage the floor.

2. Hosting Parties

Before guests arrive, make sure the legs of all furniture pieces are properly equipped with glides or pads for easy movement.  This is particularly important for chairs and any other pieces that might be moved during the party.  Before your event, make sure all the glides are clean and free of debris.

Spills are going to happen.  The key to minimizing damage to hardwood floors is wiping them up quickly.  A dry rag is all that is necessary to clean up most spills.  Keep a stack of rags on hand and ready to use.  After your guests have left, take a few minutes to dry mop your floors to remove any dirt and debris that may have accumulated during the party.

3. Oversized Decorations

Whether you are putting up a Christmas tree, a giant skeleton, or an oversized Menorah, take care to pad the floor so that your decorations do not cause scratches or dents.  For live Christmas trees, fountains, or any other decorations that involve water, place a plastic sheet and padding on the floor underneath the decoration to keep excess moisture from reaching the hardwood.
