3 Tips for Avoiding Floor Damage during the Holiday Season
Ready or not, the holiday season has arrived! Along with all the decorating and gift shopping comes a flurry of activity that has the potential to damage your hardwood floors. As Alexander Graham Bell said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” With that in mind, here are three tips that can keep your Mullican floors looking fantastic.
1. Christmas Trees
Avoid water damage and scratching by placing a plastic sheet on the floor where the tree will stand, then add a mat on top. For your top layer, select a decorative tree skirt large enough to cover the protective coverings underneath.
2. Visitor Traffic
To limit the debris that makes its way into your home, place outdoor mats at each entryway and clean them regularly. Place rugs inside entryways and, if possible, have visitors remove their shoes at the door. A shoe rack or oversized basket can be placed near the entry for convenience.
Place area rugs in high-traffic areas throughout the home, such as hallways and gathering spaces, to protect floors from debris and moisture tracked in by guests. When selecting a rug, opt for a synthetic version, and avoid rugs with rubber or foam backings, as they can trap moisture and damage the floor.
3. Hosting Parties
Before guests arrive, make sure the legs of all furniture pieces are properly equipped with glides or pads for easy movement. This is particularly important for chairs and any pieces that might be moved before or during the party. Before your event, make sure all the glides are clean and free of debris.
Spills are going to happen. The key to minimizing damage to hardwood floors is wiping them up quickly. A dry rag is all that is necessary to clean up the spill. Keep a stack of rags on hand and ready to use. After your guests have left, take a few minutes to dry mop your floors to remove any dirt and debris that may have accumulated during the party.
